Stainless steel is steel alloyed with chromium (minimum 10.5% content) and other elements which produces a good resistance to corrosion in oxidising environments.
Stainless steel’s resistance to atmospheric corrosion is excellent, however in certain atmospheres (e.g. in the presence of chlorides – at the seaside or in salt water) pitting can occur. When exposed to acids the corrosion resistance is similar to mild steel.
Advantages:
- Good corrosion resistance in oxidising environments
- Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
The disadvantages of stainless steel are that it can be expensive and difficult to weld. It can also be more problematic to work with than other metals.
